NOTPLA, offers seaweed-based ‘edible plastic’ packaging

The London startup Notpla has announced that it has created an alternative to plastic using seaweed which is biodegradable and even edible.

Notpla’s natural plastic packaging biodegrades in four to six weeks, according to the company, in comparison to the hundreds of years it takes for synthetic plastic to biodegrade.

The membrane is made from seaweed farmed in the north of France. It is dried and ground into a powder, then a secret recipe transforms it into a thick and viscous fluid, which dries to form a plastic-like substance.
