Macro-algae as an alternative to plastic in packaging

Could algae be a response to the environmental problem linked to the use of plastic?

Facing the environmental problems relating to the abundance of plastic in our everyday lives, measures are being taken by governments to drastically reduce the quantities of plastic produced and used. The paths considered include replacing plastic with other materials and developing biodegradable biosourced packaging, which are the subject of many studies.

In this context, macro-algae, composed of polymers with gelling and filmogenic properties may be a beneficial resource. Tests carried out by a semi-dry extrusion process with 100% algal matrices had promising results. However, lots of development is still needed for these materials to obtain the same properties as plastics and cover market needs.
